About Us

Ecowave (Guarantee) Limited was incorporated in June 2012 as a Social Enterprise that strongly applies commercial strategies to maximize social and environmental impacts This includes engaging with sustainable agricultural value chain development and promoting responsible tourism with a focus on sustainable consumption and production, and the people, planet, profit business model.

Ecowave has been established upon positive experiences and lessons learnt from the work of ICEI, an Italian NGO that has been supporting the creation and strengthening of Ecowave from its birth. Through the partnership between ICEI and Ecowave, projects funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and other donors such as the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), have supported the growth of Ecowave in order to carry out its Mission: “to promote the livelihoods of marginalized small scale farmers and rural communities by providing high-end market opportunities and linkages, thus improving their livelihood while caring for the environment and its natural resources.”

In these projects, technical expertise and assistance for the development of Ecowave has also been provided by Overseas NGO, and later on by other international partners.

Ecowave Travels (Pvt) Ltd., was incorporated in early 2013 as the tourism wing of Ecowave with a mission to deliver exceptional eco-agro travel experiences for visitors while ensuring that local communities benefit through the practice of responsible tourism. www.ecowavetravels.lk

The Ecowave Outlet, a unique, multi-purpose shop was unveiled in the center of Arugambay in April 2013,to support the mission of Ecowave. Arugambay is well known as an International Surfers’ Paradise, situated in the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, attracting many tourists from all over the world.

The Ecowave Outlet aims to:
  • Provide a high-end market opportunity for the products of rural communities,
  • Provide service and support to local farmers,
  • Facilitate responsible community-based tourism,
  • Sell to the tourists ethically produced, organic, eco-friendly products that embody the authentic Sri Lankan traditions,
  • Create permanent employment and sustainable incomes for the community.

The Ecowave Spice Factory was established in 2017 in order to produce high quality products and provide high-end market opportunities to farmers. This became possible through the collaboration and support of the Italian NGO ICEI, funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and through a matching grant received by Ecowave from USAID’s Vega Biz+ Project. More recently a collaboration with the private company Soul Spice funded by GIZ came forward to guide us to meet quality requirements to access high-end European markets.

Our Philosophy:

"Doing Good Doing Green"

With our motto “Doing Good Doing Green “, we are committed to promote sustainable production and consumption patterns. The global community needs to adopt different strategies to mitigate the many challenges we currently face, such as climate change, pandemics, economic crisis and, at the same time, to fulfill the needs of future generations.

Sustainable production refers to the supply side: We focus on improving environmental performance/sustainable practices in key economic sectors, such as agriculture and tourism.

Sustainable consumption addresses the demand side: We focus on influencing consumers’ behavior towards more sustainable choices, stressing that goods and services are required to meet basic standards to improve quality of life - such as food and drinks, health, shelter, clothing and leisure.

Being a Social Enterprise, Ecowave has a clear commitment about what it does with its profits: those are reinvested to further the social mission and to enhance the social impact – we want people to be brought out of poverty, to acquire new skills; we wish new jobs being created, pollution diminished, better food to be consumed. Agriculture, for us, is not "business as usual".
